Aromatherapy or Ahhh-roma-therapy

Humans can distinguish over 10,000 different odor molecules. We do this by simply breathing. When a whiff of air goes up the nostrils it makes its way to the roof of the nasal cavity where it hits a tiny area called the olfactory epithelium. The olfactory epithelium contains millions of olfactory receptor neurons. On the surface of these neurons are odorant receptors that relay the smell information to the olfactory bulb (just underneath the front of the brain) and then on to the olfactory cortex in the temporal lobe of the brain.

The sense of smell is known to be linked to the same area of the brain that handles memory and behavior, which is why a familiar scent can trigger a vivid memory or a feeling about the first time you smelled it. Scientists have found that our sense of smell intensifies when we sense a dangerous smell, such as a fire, triggering our brain’s fight-or-flight response. By that same rule, it’s not surprising that the effect of different scents on emotion, memory, appetite, energy, sexual arousal and more can be very strong.

Researchers also found that sleepers exposed to an unpleasant smell will have negative dreams. The opposite is also true. When people were exposed to the smell of roses, their dreams were mostly positive. Unless of course a person associated the smell of roses with a bad experience.

In most men, it was found that the smell of lavender, pumpkin pie, doughnuts and black licorice, increased in blood flow to the penis by an amazing 40 percent on average. Separately of course, there's no telling what all of these scents mixed together would trigger!

In most women the smell of candy, cucumber and baby powder, increased vaginal blood flow. The smell of lavender and pumpkin pie also worked on the ladies, but to a lesser extent.

Essential oils form the basis of treatment in aromatherapy, and can be used in a number of different ways and combinations to create a desired effect.
